Dimitris  Azemopoulos

CONSUL GENERAL OF GREECE IN TORONTO, CANADA


Dimitris Azemopoulos was born in Athens in 1961. He studied Law and Political Sciences-major in European and International Studies at the University of Athens. Both degrees were awarded to him “cum Laude”.

He completed his postgraduate studies at the University of London-LSE
(LLM) (1985), University of Sorbonne - Paris II (DEA) (1986) and University of Athens (1997). He was admitted to the Athens Bar Association (1987), ranking first among 301 candidates.

After successfully finishing a two year course at the National School of Public Administration, he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1992).

Dimitris Azemopoulos served consecutively in the diplomatic Cabinets of the Minister of Foreign Affairs (1992-1993) and the President of the Republic (1993-1995).

In September 1995, he was posted to the Greek Embassy in Warsaw where he served until December 1998 as Counselor. He was then detached to the Council of the EU where he worked as Principal Administrator in the Gen. Secretariat and as Head of Unit for the relations of the EU with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and the Council of Europe (February 1999-October 2002).

In November 2002 he was appointed member of the Cabinet of the EU Commissioner for Employment and Equal Opportunities. He also served in the Cabinet of the EU Commissioner for Environment until the end of December 2004.

Upon his return to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he served, during 2005, in the Cabinet of the deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and then as Head of Unit of the OSCE.

In January 2006, Dimitris Azemopoulos was appointed Head of the Cabinet of the Director General responsible for the international organizations and security.

He then served as Director of the Cabinet of the Secretary General for European Affairs in the MFA until September 2007. 

In October 2007 Mr. Azemopoulos became First Counsellor at the Embassy of Greece in Norway and with parallel accreditation to Iceland (2007-2009).

On February 26th 2009 Dimitris Azemopoulos assumed his responsibilities as Consul General of Greece in Toronto.

He is fluent in English, French, Italian and Spanish and has working knowledge of German, Turkish and Polish.

He has been decorated with the Eagle of the Polish Republic and the Cross of the Commander of the Italian Republic.
