Independence Day message from Deputy FM Mr. Kassimis to Greeks abroad

Dear compatriots,

It is a great pleasure and very moving to be addressing you on this historic day of national rebirth; a day that holds so many memories and messages for Greeks around the world.

One hundred and eighty-seven years ago, our forebears, lacking material means and greatly outnumbered, fought not only a powerful enemy, but also the established order in 19th century Europe. They did this guided by the dream of a free homeland. It was a cause that to all appearances was doomed to failure. But they won. They were victorious because they believed what no one else believed, using their last ounce of strength on the battle fields, unwilling to reconcile themselves with the notion of defeat and a lost dream. They were victorious, giving us the gift of a free Greece today; a Greece that with new efforts and sacrifices gained the respect and appreciation of its partners in the society of nations.

One hundred and eighty-seven years later, the challenges our country is facing are different, but no less important for maintaining its territorial integrity, protecting its cultural heritage and defending its national rights. Battle is done daily off the battle fields, and as Greeks we are being called upon to prove ourselves worthy protectors of the heritage left to us by our forebears. Let us not forget that what they achieved was the product of unity and faith in the ultimate objective. So let us be guided in the same way today, showing once again to the rest of the world that the greatness of peoples is not measured in numbers or material means, but by the spirit and courage that is shown when circumstances demand it. We owe this to our forebears, but even more so to ourselves and to our children.

You have my heartfelt wishes for your health and prosperity, and I take this opportunity to send you my warmest patriotic greetings.

Theodore P. Kassimis
